If your users are suddenly unable to sign into Outlook, Microsoft Teams, or OneDrive, and are receiving a bizarre “You’ll need the Internet for this” error despite having a perfect Wi-Fi connection, you are not alone.
This is a globally recognized bug caused by the recent Windows 11 March 2026 cumulative update (KB5079473). The update aggressively alters the OS network connectivity state, tricking Microsoft 365 apps into thinking the PC is offline. Here is the exact, Microsoft-approved emergency fix to get your users back online immediately.
The Solution: Force the Out-of-Band Emergency Patch (KB5085516) Microsoft realized the severity of this bug and rapidly issued an “Out-of-Band” (OOB) emergency patch. However, because it is an OOB update, many Windows machines will not download it automatically until their next scheduled maintenance window. You have to force it.
How to Apply the Fix Manually:
- Press the Windows Key and type Settings, then hit Enter.
- Navigate to Windows Update on the left-hand menu.
- Click the Check for updates button.
- Look specifically for an update labeled KB5085516.
- Click Download and Install.
- Crucial Step: You must restart the PC while it remains connected to the network. If the user restarts the PC while disconnected from Wi-Fi or the corporate VPN, the network state will not reset, and the apps will remain locked.
The Temporary Workaround (If the Patch Fails) If your corporate WSUS or endpoint manager is blocking the new patch from downloading, you have to bypass the desktop apps temporarily.
The web versions of Outlook, Teams, and Word bypass the local Windows network state bug entirely and will function normally until your IT department can push the KB5085516 patch globally.
